  • Understand the various responsibilities of the Special Inspector and the protocol they must follow during verification and notifying discrepancies.
  • Comply with special inspection requirements of the enforcing jurisdiction in accordance with the applicable code, approved plans, and specifications.
  • Gain familiarity with IBC, ASTM, and AISC standards regarding structural steel buildings and high strength bolts.
  • Be able to verify bolting components and requirements through installation as per approved plans and specifications.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE ET18

Measurable Learner Objectives.

Students will gain the following skills during this course:

  • Understand design requirements, orientation, schedules, and specific directions that are commonly found in structural plans.
  • Verify whether the contractor complies with the approved specifications for the building, and to be able to identify discrepancies.
  • Develop familiarity with the symbols and abbreviations used on building plans
  • Improve navigational skills with structural drawings.

TOPICAL COURSE OUTLINE ET17

This course will cover codes laid out by the International Code Council regarding when and where special inspection is required. Structural steel and bolting will be the primary focuses of this course. Standards and tolerances of structural shapes will be discussed, as will the codes governing fabrication and erection. Bolting will cover: components, joint type, pre-installation verification, inspection, and arbitration.

TOPICAL COURSE OUTLINE ET18

This course will cover the basics of how to read and interpret structural drawings. There will be a general overview of terms commonly encountered in construction vernacular, followed by an explanation of how to understand sections and elevations. General notes, floor plans, schedules, sections, and typical details will be discussed, followed by an examination of sample drawings for practice.
